Weird Noise

In 2022, I started a print zine for audio called Weird Noise. The first edition was a Finalist at the 2023 Third Coast Awards in their Audio Unbound category, alongside McSweeney’s Audio Issue.

The Weird Noise logo was designed by Ariana Martinez.

Weird Noise 001 was a hand-stamped A5 box featuring 65 pages of manifestos, poems, artworks and new imaginations for the radio. It’s now available to read online here in a website that, like this one, was created by Charlie Shackleton.

Weird Noise 001 includes work from Kalli Anderson, Talia Augustidis, Redzi Bernard, Bengt, Bok, Mira Burt-Wintonick, Sara Brooke Curtis, Sami El-Enany, Nina Garthwaite, Jazmine Green, Christina Hardinge, Rikke Houd, Agnieszka Czyżewska Jacquemet, Axel Kacoutié, Mitra Kaboli, Rose de Larrabeiti, Alex Lewis, Michelle Macklem, Ariana Martinez, Suzie McCarthy, Phoebe McIndoe, Marta Medvešek, Lulu Miller, Vaida Pilibaitytė, Phoebe Rex, Veronica Simmonds, Katharina Smets, Phil Smith, Jon Tjhia and Michael Umney.

Into the Ether was the first in a series of new miniature Weird Noise editions.

Part essay and part archival project, it explored the spirits of radio's imaginative past and how our memories of the radio might shape the sound of its future.

Each zine came with a blank postcard, inviting readers to share a memory of the radio - a sound, a scene, a story that was lodged in their imaginations after listening. You can read some of the responses here.

The second in a series of miniature Weird Noise editions.

Out of Thin Air is a one-page map-fold zine, featuring an interview with Shortwave Collective - an international feminist artist group using the electromagnetic spectrum as artistic material. They deliver workshops nationally and internationally, constructing open radio receivers.

Each cover is hand-stamped in silver with artwork created by Nina Garthwaite and internal map-fold collage made by me.
